CONTINUE POLICE HIRING REQUEST

CONTINUE POLICE HIRING REQUEST
BUDGET IMPACT ON THE LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT

Tomorrow (April 14th) the Los Angeles City Council will vote to discontinue hiring Los Angeles Police Officers.

The mayor and the City Council have declared that Public Safety (Police and Fire) is their number one City priority.

The LAPD is looking for community support to ensure that the number of Los Angeles Police Officers stays at the authorized strength of 9963 police officers.

The LAPD is doing its part already to help with the current City budget crisis. Nearly 100 million dollars has been slashed from the police department budget.

Overtime for officers is now paid in compensatory time off which reduces the number of officers working each day by 286 officers.

It is anticipated that by summer the police department will lose the equivalent of 600 officers per day due to compensatory time off.

If the City Council freezes hiring approximately 90 police officer positions will be lost between now and the end of the year. That will be nearly 700 fewer officers working each day.

In addition, the loss of civilian personnel in recent budget cuts, furloughs and early retirement has caused the Department to move officers from the field to fill these administrative positions.

Please contact your City Council person today and ask them to support the continued hiring of police officers to replace retiring officers. This is critical to reduce the threat of increased crime in Los Angeles.
